About the Philodendron Species Print
The Painting Process
Out of all of the aroids, I think Philodendron is one of the most interesting and diverse genera. There are species with massive round green leaves, species with beautiful patterned velvet leaves, and a wide variety of unusual lobed shapes. Each individual leaf on this print was originally hand painted in watercolor - my goal was to illustrate this diversity, and all of the ways that different Philodenron species are similar and unique.

Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron spiritus sancti and others
Growing My Own Reference
I only use my own original reference for my paintings - either a live plant or photos I've taken of plants I've seen at botanical gardens, nurseries, or private collections. Many of the leaves on this print were painted from live reference of plants that I'm growing myself. I've found that Philodendron are some of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow, both as houseplants and outside in my Florida garden. This big Philodendron gloriosum is probably my favorite - I've had it for years and divided it many times to create new plants!
